DescriptionDescriptionSpecificity This antibody recognizes human, mouse, and chicken DNA Ligase III. Cellular localization is nuclear and mitochondrial. Background There are four distinct ligase proteins found in mammalian cells. These DNA ligases are required for joining DNA strand breaks that occur during DNA replication, repair and recombination. DNA Ligase III is a 100kDa (a-form) protein in somatic tissues, is ubiquitously expressed, and complexes with XRCC-1 and a 97kDa (§-form) protein that is found in testis. DNA Ligase III is involved in rejoining DNA single-strand breaks and in base excision repair pathway. Function Isoform 3 functions as heterodimer with DNA-repair protein XRCC1 in the nucleus and can correct defective DNA strand-break repair and sister chromatid exchange following treatment with ionizing radiation and alkylating agents. Isoform 1 is targeted to mitochondria, where it functions as DNA ligase in mitochondrial base-excision DNA repair (PubMed:10207110, PubMed:24674627). {PubMed:10207110, PubMed:24674627}.
