Background CD14 is a 53-55 kD GPI-anchored single chain glycoprotein that plays a role in the clearance of gram-negative pathogens by interacting with other proteins, including TLR-4 and MD-2, to mediate the innate immune response to bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS). As a high-affinity receptor for LPS, it is involved in the upregulation of adhesion molecules and cytokine expression in monocytes and neutrophils.
