Background
Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPPA) is a secreted metalloproteinase that cleaves insulin-like growth factor binding proteins to increase the bioavailability of insulin-like growth factors1. Currently, in conjunction with other biomarkers, it is used in prenatal screening for chromosomal abnormalities including Down syndrome2.

PAPPA has emerged as a valuable marker in cardiovascular medicine, where elevated levels are associated with an increased risk of adverse cardiovascular events3. It has also been shown to be useful in the detection of gestational diabetes1 and thyroid cancer 4.
